Kestin Cornwall - Shephard Fairey, AP Settle Dispute Over Obama Poster

Street artist Shepard Fairey and the Associated Press have settled their legal dispute over the former’s iconic ‘Hope’ campaign poster of Barack Obama. The case had been running for about two years now. “In settling the lawsuit, the AP and Mr Fairey have agreed that neither side surrenders its view of the law,” said the AP in a statement, adding that Fairey has agreed not to use another AP photo in his work without prior permission. Both parties will work together with future developments of the Hope image, and will share rights to reproduce and merchandise the image. Financial terms were not disclosed by the AP. Flickr is one of the most popular photo storage and sharing sites around, and there's a good reason for that. It's free and easy to use, and it features various methods for sorting, categorizing and tagging images. The interface is attractive, and it's fun to browse. Kestin Cornwall - Duke Ellington is "American Music"

Duke Ellington called his music "American Music" rather than jazz, and liked to describe those who impressed him as "beyond category. He remains one of the most influential figures in jazz, if not in all American music and is widely considered as one of the twentieth century's best known personalities.

Duke Ellington is best remembered for the over 3000 songs that he composed during his lifetime. His best known titles include; "It Don't Mean a Thing if It Ain't Got That Swing", "Sophisticated Lady", "Mood Indigo", “Solitude", "In a Mellotone", and "Satin Doll". The most amazing part about Ellington was the most creative while he was on the road. It was during this time when he wrote his most famous piece, "Mood Indigo"which brought him worldwide fame.

Duke Ellington was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1966. He was later awarded several other prizes, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969, and the Legion of Honor by France in 1973, the highest civilian honors in each country. He died of lung cancer and pneumonia on May 24, 1974, a month after his 75th birthday, and is buried in the Bronx, in New York City. At his funeral attendedby over 12,000 people at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Ella Fitzgerald summed up the occasion, "It's a very sad day...A genius has passed."

This is the second piece of a series I’m currently working on studying jewelry and clothing from both India and Sri Lanka (see previous post). It’s called ‘Black Brown and Beige’ it took me hours upon hours to do to the excessive detail. I want to push some of the detail even farther on the final 3 images. This will be screen -printed as well but is intended to be printed quite large.

I’m currently in the process of moving my blog page as well, I’ll post the link to the new one soon! It will be much like this one but with much larger images. Stay tuned for more particulars! Badass!

Above is one of my favorite commercials! I absolutely love it!

The second movie clip is actually two promotional videos combined together. The first part is a commercial about the House of Dior and J'Adore, and the second part is about the "kitchen" of the mentioned fragrance.

The second part starts with Christian Dior's residence at Granville/France, continues with flower fields of Grasse and essential oils , the lab, the production phase and finally the making of the bottle for the special edition of J'Adore.

François Demachy, who guides the audience through the movie is the "Fragrance Olfactory Development Director for Fragrances and Cosmetics" of the LVMH Group (Guerlain, Dior, Kenzo, Givenchy, Acqua di Parma, Loewe, Pucci, Fendi etc).

The parfumeur/nose behind J'Adore (1999) is Calice Becker who is currently working for Givaudan Company. PES today, I love it! It’s so badass! He works mainly using stop motion, an animation technique used to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence.

Wingsuit flying is the sport of flying the human body through the air using a special jumpsuit, called a wingsuit, this adds surface area to the human body to enable a significant increase in lift.

Wings were first used in the 1930s as an attempt to increase horizontal movement, between 1930 and 1961, 72 of the 75 original birdmen died testing their wingsuits

A wingsuit flight ends with a parachute opening, so a wingsuit can be flown from any point that provides sufficient altitude to glide through the air, such as a skydiving out of an aircraft or BASE jumping with exit points, to allow a parachute to deploy. Wild!

Top 10 pick for 2011! Fans of disco, pop, electro, and funk, alike will enjoy the unique, energetic sound of Los Angeles' Love Grenades. The three piece was discovered by electro veteran Sam Sparro, who remixed one of their tracks. From then on it's been a quick journey to the release of their EP, Tigers in the Fire, which contains the original of the single, three remixes, and two other tracks.

Love Grenades plays often in the Los Angeles area and is beginning to branch out, playing shows in Vegas and Miami, other party destinations. Their sound is appropriate for club venues and house parties, with quality recordings, while still maintaining the gritty underground feel they are so fond of.

This one is currently unnamed but its part of my ‘Las Niñas Indias’ series, based on jewelry and clothing from both India and Sri Lanka. It’s designed using gray tones specifically for multiple-screen printing. I plan to use very fine woven mesh to get the finest and most subtle line work possible.

I did the base line work in my sketchbook and began importing and cleaning the new line work in Illustrator this afternoon. I’ll post the finals soon!

Electro trio Kidstreet have barely started to make their mark in Toronto, but the three siblings who make up the synth-pop outfit have already inked a major licensing deal with Ford. The staccato piano from their song (simply titled Song) backs the car-maker’s latest TV spot.

Onstage, the band blends electronic elements with live drums, vocals, guitar and synths – while encouraging the crowd to dance.

I saw them live a few weeks back at the Indie Love Radio gala. Badass!

This 'Making Of' video showcases a project that started over two years ago generating dynamic textiles made from liquid, air and vapor. 1.2 kilometers of transparent plumbing tubing was knitted with fishing wire to skin Robyn's body. 40 liters of glycerol pumps through over a kilometer of tube, powered by drill pumps that connect to valves releasing air intermittently between the liquid. Gradient colors are pumped through the tubes at different speeds, the effect is a living, breathing dynamic skin that traverses the landscape of the body. Badass!

Robyn operates her own label out of the kitchen of her home, with a small handful of friends, assistants and artists. She’s not working with $500,000.00+ budgets like Black Eyed Peas or Taylor Swift but with a little creativity she blows them out of the water visually on almost every project.

It works out to be very cost effective. I like to add cottage cheese to increase my protein intake; it also speeds up muscle healing.

I finally got my new prints done, they are intended to be screen-printed. They are titled ‘Princess Purgatory’and 'The Devils Chair'. I love this chair, I want one! It’s meant to resemble carved wood and deer hooves as the chairs legs.

Jon and I will be printing these on 24’ by 36’ inch watercolor paper and white pine panels.

This Halloween Sleeping Giant Gallery is popping open it's doors on October 29th
to bring you one of Toronto’s youngest creative illustrators, Theo Gallaro.

Theo, a 12 year old illustrator, was found in the Junction recently, he is close friends with Jon Todd who you could refer to as the young artist mentor. His young creative mind absorbs information like a sponge and it reflects immensely in his drawings and illustrations. His rad opening reception Unwraps October 29th from 6pm-11pm at Sleeping Giant Gallery. They will also be hosting a "costume mandatory" Halloween party the same night, 11pm- 2am. Live music, cheap drinks and prizes for best costume.

Kestin Cornwall - New York's Tallest Residential Tower Is Frank Gehry 'Demystified'

A 70-story, folded, creased and curved stainless-steel curtain wall on an 867-ft-tall apartment building has been called “Gehry only on the outside,” as if the building is a fake Frank. In some ways it’s true that, when it opens next year, New York City’s tallest residential tower won’t be an internationally acclaimed cultural icon, as is the architect’s now-12-year-old Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain. The new tower is not as description-defying inside and out as the six-year-old Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. But that building was torturous to build: There were 10,000-plus requests for information (RFIs), and it was $174 million over budget and the subject of a dispute that ended in a $17.8-million settlement. There is no appreciable cost premium for the expansive, stainless-steel unitized curtain wall, courtesy of architect Frank Gehry and intensive engineering.

I do love the building! Just the very idea of the Tallest Residential Tower is exciting to me, I also love how he played with the bow of the exterior.

Kestin Cornwall - The Kanye West-directed Runaway

New York premiere of The Kanye West-directed Runaway, his new 35-minute short film, brought out a few models (Sara Ziff, Nicole Trunflo), a fashion maven or two (West's stylist Cassius Clay), as well as Charlotte Ronson, plus at least one of Kanye's Def Jam label mates. But the guest who got the photographers the most riled up—besides West himself, of course—was Victoria's Secret model Selita Ebanks, who stars in West's film as a phoenix fallen to earth. West once again showcases why he’s one of the best in the game, fearless creativity and a great team of artists.

It’s a dream like mini-movie that’s beautifully shot, using a heavily-saturated color palette; bright oranges, fiery reds, and lush forest-greens, the light imagery and a heavy message — roughly speaking, people aren’t open-minded; they don’t accept what they don’t directly understand, the world is one sided. Take it as a metaphor for how West feels about the reception of not necessarily his music, but his public behavior (His pink Polo shirts early on in his career before it was cool, his sensitive music, his out burst on live television), and you probably wouldn’t be wrong.

It’s the story of the phoenix (played by model Selita Ebanks) who falls to Earth in front of West’s car. West, playing a version of himself, tried to introduce her to a world that confused her, and was confused by her.

Runaway aired simultaneously on MTV, MTV2, and BET; each channel inserted their commercials into Runaway in a cruelly abrupt manner that spoiled the flow of West’s film. Terrible! They should apologize to him. It's a stunningly fantastic accomplishment and I absolutely love its over extended scenes, hard to follow plot and at times choppy and seemingly under thought story. Gnarly!

I Hit up the second part of my LG Fashion Week list of show’s on Wednesday! It was fun, saw a lot of familiar faces, met some old friends, enjoyed a few fun interviews. They where a little tight on drinks this time, the entire young cast of Degrassi were present.

Well loved by celebrities and those in the know across North America, Winnipeg native and Portland-based Rachel Mara was welcomed to Toronto fashion week by the rare sound of pre-show cheers. Rachel Mara’s show commenced at 8pm.

The theme was 'glamorous getaway,' but the vibe was Bonnie and Clyde. One of my favorite and most talented models out of Toronto joined her line up, the young Renee Thompson who I had the pleasure of working with in 2008.

Her line was soft with a hard edge, very Soho New York dinner party with an after party appeal. Something I would love my girlfriend to show up in with a bottle of wine in hand and her girlfriends waiting in the cab.

DJ Lil Pete sent me a tweet (Twitter message) yesterday saying he played the Special and Truezt remix of We No Speak Americano (Its T-Shirt Time) at Club XS, after we recived a request to come up with an English version of the song. On our way home I tossed the idea out of using the saying ‘T-shirt time’ from the reality TV show Jersey Shore. Riley (Special) loved the idea and cooked up the majority of the song that night, Truezt completed his verse late that week.

The video of the Jersey Shore cast dancing to the song went viral and now has just under 7000 plays on Youtube in under 6 days. Download the remix here.

‘OR’ by Angela Chen runway show took place on Tuesday, October 19 @ 4:00PM at Heritage Court, 100 Princes' Blvd in Toronto. It was well put together. Her show was awesome!

With images of crashing waves projected onto a big screen, Angela Chen captured the dreaminess of the sand and surf with her island-inspired collection unveiled at Toronto's LG Fashion Week Tuesday.

There was a very soft edge, playfulness and gracefulness in the collection, which featured mostly free-form, fluid pieces amid more body-hugging creations. Rad, it was a look I would love my girlfriend to wear. The collection was largely bathed in soft, natural hues including pale green, muted grey, beige, white and airbrushed blue.

Kestin Cornwall - Cover Banned?

If you haven't heard by now, Kanye West announced that the cover for his forthcoming album, 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy', has been banned. His label apparently later stated they would stand behind him but warned of the possible consequences.

The artwork (a portrait by George Condo) is a male (presumably West) straddled by a female (presumably a phoenix). Both characters are depicted nude although only one nipple of the phoenix's breasts and her buttocks are visible.

Its West’s fifth studio album and is scheduled to be released on Roc-A-Fella Records on November 22. Badass. Production will come from West himself, Q-Tip, DJ Premier, RZA, Pete Rock, Madlib, DJ Toomp, Swizz Beatz, Lex Luger, and Justin Vernon.

Either way, one thing remains clear: The cover for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy it seems is a little too twisted for someone out there but fits the album perfectly! What do you think? It’s just art right.

I went home for the weekend; it was great seeing my family and spending time with my sisters. It

helped me put things into perspective and I feel motivated and supported.

My sister is currently working on her first film, she’s also a photographer. She basically looks at

the world trough a lens, its awesome! She just talked and photographed everywhere we went.

We all took the ride North and went apple picking (call me a nerd but I really enjoy it), laughed

with mom and talk with dad. It was definitely great to be around the family and to have everyone

in one room.

The main song is powerful but their delivery is not as potent as it was in the past. Against Me! once a band that sung about being content living off dumpsters and struggling to pay rent, they now seek mainstream approval and stadium rock superstardom. Is what it is.

“I Was a Teenage Anarchist” is basically a safe bet played by four men looking for the winning hand (Issue is art is not a poker game) --a reminder, as if we needed one, that glory days are just that, glory days.

Lady Gaga‘s third outfit of the night at the 2010 News1st Video Music Awards was gnarly! Gaga wore a meat dress, hat, shoes, and purse by designer Franc Fernandez.

This meat-as-art is a perspective we’ve seen before in artist Mark Ryden ‘s (one of my top 20 favorite artists) work, who painted a picture named “Incarnation” of a girl wearing a meat dress that is similar to Lady Gaga ‘s dress (see the similarity above).

I’ve been in and around the industry since Jon Todd, Dustin Jenner and I had our first illustration show back in 2005 at SPIN Gallery. I initially met Tania in 2005 when I was attending Sheridan College. She was the first professional model I worked with under eLLIPTIC Clothing Company in 2007. Tania is now under Hines Management, with Amy Hines, www.hinesmanagement.com. She’s always looking for new projects and is a great addition to any team.

Tania Z had her beautiful birthday party at Brassaii Restaurant and Lounge on King Street (Not my usual style). It’s a beautiful place with a great patio, dinner space and multiple dance floors. Its the design and layout , artwork that struck me for a new take on the ‘Done Before’ club scene in the city. It brought a nice Chicago style to the city although its still missing the natural energy Chicago clubs seem to have.

Tania arrived fashionably late as usual, she was surrounded by what seemed to be regulars and some old friends of her’s. I ran into some old friends of mine as well. Nick Truezt Pasvanis and I were just about to head over to Cobra when Tania appeared in a booth on the West side of the Lounge. I stayed a little longer then I had planned. I was booked to make a short appearance and head out but it’s been so long since I had a chance to see her. Great girl, loves life, works and knows how to party!

Focus Features has released the first poster for Anton Corbijn’s, The American and it’s an eye-catcher, I love the poster art. They simplified it (much like the poster to a foriegn film) and have given it a 70’s feel. I love when poster art breaks from the bland photoshopped photography, black text and floating-heads we see so often. While the poster almost makes the movie look like a vintage spy flick, The American is about an assassin (Old George) working one last job in Italy and begins to develop a friendship with a local priest and a romantic relationship with a local woman. The American hit theaters on September 1st

The Good Neighbour is the new hot spot in my area and has been for some time now! I love the space, nice people and a great location. Trendy (most would call it), I would call it appropriately placed.

The bright cafe has a fashionable lounge feel and lots of space. It’s located just outside of Bloor West Village in the Junction just down the street form SMASH Gallery. If there is one thing this area prides itself on, it’s the coffee and theirs is up to par. Definitely a great space to check your email on your laptop on a Wednesday afternoon.

Well one of my best friends, co founder of 1i5 Studios in 2006 and fellow artist Brianne Service packed her bags. She decided to complete her teaching program in the arts in Florence. She’s one of many of my friends who have decided to make the trip; I’ll eventfully make the trip as well!

Florence Italy (Firenza Italia) is famous for its world-class art galleries, museums and beautiful setting along the Arno River. Visitors can hike up to Piazzale Michelangelo and enjoy a fabulous view of Florence's skyline and its beautiful bridges. Honestly, my main reason for going would be to see and hear the Italian opera! Badass!

All I have to say is… ‘stellar!’ Machete is an action flick made for the silver screen! Co-written, produced, and directed by Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis, It ‘s an extension of a fake trailer that was released together with Rodriguez' and Quentin Tarantino's 2007 Grindhouse. It includes much of the same footage. Danny Trejo stars in his first lead role as the title character. It also stars, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan, Don Johnson, Jessica Alba, and Robert De Niro who filmed scenes for the film during the fall of 2009. Looks rad, I love the B Movie genre and I’m a huge fan of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's work! 2007’s Grindhouse is a definite classic!

Like Jon Todd, F.O.F, Jerome Jenner, Turf One and the rest of us Dan Bergeron grew up on rock and hip–hop as well as the street art started by the masters in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Dan, who also goes by the tag Fauxreel, is perhaps best known for his billboard takeovers where he manipulates existing ads and turns them into a joke, a political statement or simply a work of art. An artist makes it their job to engage you and ultimately enrich your life through their work, Dan does this effortlessly.

I love Dan's work. He is a photographer by trade who focuses most of his efforts on editorial, commercial and art photography. His client list includes major brands like Adidas and Nike. He's been published in several magazines and completed CD cover art for a range of artists.

In 2008 Dan took over Toronto with his Vespa campaign, where Dan wheat pasted rad dudes with scooter-heads up all throughout the city. Badass. Jon Todd and I loved it and spent 2 weeks tracking down who the artist was.
